At the conclusion of a sabbatical leave, the faculty member will forward to the department chairperson and the dean copies of a report on activities undertaken during the period of the leave. To be on sabbatical leave, a member of the faculty needs to prove his/her academic competencies as required by the home institute. Sample Term and Compensation of the Sabbatical Leave for Faculty Members Generally, sabbatical leave permission is given to the eligible and competent faculty member, for the usual teaching semesters (i.e., September to June inclusive) of one academic year, at given amount of the annual base salary; of course, this will differ for various institutes and universities. The respective faculty member must prove that the proposed research will benefit the home institution and that the spent time and amount will be compensated. As something general, a faculty member must have established academic competence over the years of their service in their home institutions. Procedure for Granting a Sabbatical Leave Application for a sabbatical leave must be submitted in written form by the faculty member to the department chairperson within a given deadline. KEY POINTS • There is no legal obligation or commitment on employers to provide employees with sabbatical leave; • Sabbatical leave is often supposed to be an important part of an employee's career and professional development, and may be granted on the basis of different grounds including study, research, travel or voluntary work. • Offering sabbatical leave permissions to senior staff can aid their retention by granting them the chance to try something different with the security of being aware that they can return to work at the end of the time away, i.e., their sabbatical leave. • Employers who grant sabbatical leave usually attach various conditions and terms, both in respect of eligibility for a sabbatical and what happens/or must happen during and at the end of the sabbatical leave itself. • Sabbaticals are customarily available to faculty members who occupy senior levels or defined disciplines and to those who have rendered a specified minimum number of years' continuous service with the organization/ home institutions. • Suggestions and legal pre-requisites for employers state that it must be clear in their sabbaticals policy that the granting of a sabbatical leave depends on (amongst other things) the employer's operational requirements at the relevant time period, and that no request is guaranteeable even where an employee meets all the eligibility criteria. • Where an employer grants sabbatical leave to the member of the faculty, it must ensure that part-time employees are provided with the same benefits as equivalent full-time staff - for instance, any period of service requirement must be the same as for full-time employees. • Rules on sabbatical leave for faculty members must include whether the sabbatical is paid (in full or in part), how will the faculty member’s leave affect the job they occupied while the individual is away, and the employee's rights in respect of the return to work. • The employer must decide as part of its sabbatical policy what employment benefits (if any) will be continued during the faculty member’s sabbatical leave. • If pay is not maintained during a sabbatical leave for a faculty member, the contract of employment is normally regarded as suspended, so that no contractual benefits are due either. • An employer who gives sabbatical leave permission usually requires the faculty member to stay in touch during the period of sabbatical leave. • It is most significant that both the employer and the employee agree in advance when and how the faculty member will return to the workplace. • The employer must take particular care to make sure that any guarantee of re-employment is worded explicitly and unambiguously in order to avoid any disagreement or challenge at a later date for those faculty members who go on a sabbatical leave. • If the payment of salary for faculty member is continued during the sabbatical leave, it has the effect that the contract of employment continues in force, which in turn conveys that the employee's continuity of service is preserved for statutory purposes. • Where a period of sabbatical leave for faculty member is on unpaid basis (meaning that the contract of employment is called null and void), the employee's continuity of service may nevertheless be preserved following their return to work on the condition that the sabbatical leave was the result of a prior 'arrangement' or a 'custom'. Sabbatical Leave and Sponsored Research and Related Activities All sabbatical leave arrangements approved by different institutes are set in a way that the faculty member is not permitted to involve in any form of regular academic or other employment to add to the sabbatical salary. However, a member of the faculty might be entitled to enrich the salary provided by the University during the period of leave with the amount and funding provided by an external sponsor for research and other related activities, in an amount consented to be paid by the sponsor, so long as the total compensation is no more than the full base salary and the leave otherwise comports with the terms and conditions of the award. The faculty member has to take the initiative to report plans for sabbatical leave to the sponsor and identify the salary supplementation explicitly in the proposal whenever possible and wherever applicable, and must make known to the department chairpersons and dean at the time of request for sabbatical leave that such funding is being, or will be, sought from the sponsor. Benefits During Sabbatical Leave of Absence During a leave of absence for faculty members, some/ whole of the benefits may be affected. The Benefits Offices or any similar authority at the home institution should be contacted for details regarding how to continue benefit coverage and the length of time for which (if ever) benefits may be continued. Purpose
A sabbatical leave or visiting scholar program or guest scholar program, as differentiated with a terminal leave, which is a leave without compensation, or a leave on health grounds, is defined as a leave for the purpose of encouraging and motivating faculty members (which of course included the administrative officers who occupy faculty rank) to involve in or start a scholarly research or other activities intended to increase their scholarly attainment or their competence and capabilities to render service to the University. A sabbatical leave is not grantable for the purpose of taking regular academic or other employment of pecuniary advantage elsewhere.

Eligibility
Eligibility factors for sabbatical leave and visiting scholar programs and permission differ in nature as far as the various institutes and their needs and financial status are concerned but, there is an overall trend on applying eligibility factors. Except as provided by university or institute policies that allow sabbatical leaves for Full-Time, eligibility for a sabbatical leave is, in most cases, limited to full-time members of the faculty who have secured tenure rights and have completed definite years of full-time service as members of the faculty at the home institute. In general, at least some given number of years must pass between consecutive sabbaticals. This means that sabbatical leave might be more than once.
At the conclusion of a sabbatical leave, the faculty member will forward to the department chairperson and the dean copies of a report on activities undertaken during the period of the leave.
To be on sabbatical leave, a member of the faculty needs to prove his/her academic competencies as required by the home institute.
Sample Term and Compensation of the Sabbatical Leave for Faculty Members
Generally, sabbatical leave permission is given to the eligible and competent faculty member, for the usual teaching semesters (i.e., September to June inclusive) of one academic year, at given amount of the annual base salary; of course, this will differ for various institutes and universities.
The respective faculty member must prove that the proposed research will benefit the home institution and that the spent time and amount will be compensated. As something general, a faculty member must have established academic competence over the years of their service in their home institutions. Since Sabbatical leaves are periods of paid or unpaid period away from work which are agreed between the employer and employee, the key points to be agreed on is whether the employment contract remains in place during the sabbatical. This will be an important issue as in most of the cases the members of the faculty return (which of course is stipulated in most of the contracts) to their home institutions.

Procedure for Granting a Sabbatical Leave
Application for a sabbatical leave must be submitted in written form by the faculty member to the department chairperson within a given deadline. Because of the impact of a leave on departmental planning, early application is usually recommended by the home institutions.

• The employer must decide as part of its sabbatical policy what employment benefits (if any) will be continued during the faculty member’s sabbatical leave.
• If pay is not maintained during a sabbatical leave for a faculty member, the contract of employment is normally regarded as suspended, so that no contractual benefits are due either.
• An employer who gives sabbatical leave permission usually requires the faculty member to stay in touch during the period of sabbatical leave.
• It is most significant that both the employer and the employee agree in advance when and how the faculty member will return to the workplace.
• The employer must take particular care to make sure that any guarantee of re-employment is worded explicitly and unambiguously in order to avoid any disagreement or challenge at a later date for those faculty members who go on a sabbatical leave.
• If the payment of salary for faculty member is continued during the sabbatical leave, it has the effect that the contract of employment continues in force, which in turn conveys that the employee’s continuity of service is preserved for statutory purposes.
• Where a period of sabbatical leave for faculty member is on unpaid basis (meaning that the contract of employment is called null and void), the employee’s continuity of service may nevertheless be preserved following their return to work on the condition that the sabbatical leave was the result of a prior ‘arrangement’ or a ‘custom’.
Sabbatical Leave and Sponsored Research and Related Activities
All sabbatical leave arrangements approved by different institutes are set in a way that the faculty member is not permitted to involve in any form of regular academic or other employment to add to the sabbatical salary. However, a member of the faculty might be entitled to enrich the salary provided by the University during the period of leave with the amount and funding provided by an external sponsor for research and other related activities, in an amount consented to be paid by the sponsor, so long as the total compensation is no more than the full base salary and the leave otherwise comports with the terms and conditions of the award. The faculty member has to take the initiative to report plans for sabbatical leave to the sponsor and identify the salary supplementation explicitly in the proposal whenever possible and wherever applicable, and must make known to the department chairpersons and dean at the time of request for sabbatical leave that such funding is being, or will be, sought from the sponsor.
Benefits During Sabbatical Leave of Absence
During a leave of absence for faculty members, some/ whole of the benefits may be affected. The Benefits Offices or any similar authority at the home institution should be contacted for details regarding how to continue benefit coverage and the length of time for which (if ever) benefits may be continued.
